TA is a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change. Amongst psychological approaches, TA is outstanding in the depth of its theory and the wide variety of its applications. TA is used in the treatment of psychological disorders, from everyday living problems to severe mental illness. It provides a method of psychotherapy for use with individuals, groups, couples and families.
Our team of psychologists using standardised psychometric tests can profile people for purposes of employment, therapy, or for personal interest.
We offer a counselling service to couples, that enables them to look at what is going well or less well in their relationship, how these issues arose, and what they can do about them.
Families often benefit from a chance to discover, with specialist help, the underlying system that operates in their family. Our trained therapists can enable families to come together and learn what works well and what is less functional in the way they communicate and behave towards each other.
Referrals are accepted from a variety of sources including GPs and other Medical practitioners, Solicitors, organisations and from individuals.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is a treatment whose theoretical base is information processing, how the brain 'deals with' information.
Old disturbing memories can be stored in the brain in isolation; they get locked into the nervous system with the original images, sounds, thoughts and feelings involved. The old distressing material just keeps getting triggered over and over again. This prevents learning/healing from taking place. In another part of your brain, you already have most of the information you need to resolve this problem; the two just cannot connect. Once EMDR starts, a linking takes place. New information can come to mind and resolve the old problems. This may be what happens spontaneously in REM or dream sleep when eye movements help to process unconscious material.
During EMDR the client brings to awareness past and present experiences which are then followed by sets of bilateral stimulation - most usually side-to-side eye movements, but sometimes alternating auditory (sound) tones through a headphone or tactile (touch) sensations through a thumb and finger pad.
Once the eye movements, or alternative, cease, the client is instructed to let material come to awareness without attempting to 'make anything' happen. This alternate attention to internal recollections and external stimulus is called 'dual attention'. This sequence of dual attention and personal association is repeated many times in the session.
After EMDR processing, clients generally report that the emotional distress related to the memory has been eliminated, or greatly decreased, and that they have gained important cognitive insights. Importantly, these emotional and cognitive changes usually result in spontaneous behavioural and personal change, which are further enhanced with standard EMDR procedures.
Bowen Therapy is now available at the Wealden Institute. See below for a brief introduction to this new, rapidly growing holistic approach. For an appointment please phone us or email.
The Bowen technique is a soft tissue remedial therapy, named after its innovator Tom Bowen. The technique involves the therapist using fingers or thumbs to move over muscle, ligament tendon and fascia in various parts of the body.
The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle involving no hard or prolonged pressure. During a session the client will lie on a therapy table or bed, although the work can be effectively carried out with the client in a chair.
For information on any aspect of the therapies offered, or to arrange an initial appointment please contact our office on 01892 655195. You may also email us.
